Offshore technologies development
SBM Offshore has a proud history of bringing new technologies to the offshore industries. With over 50% of our R&D budget now devoted to decarbonizing and renewable technologies, we continue our innovation journey to support the energy industry as it transitions to a cleaner future.
Despite the rate of increase of renewables, we will continue to need and use fossil energies for years to come. That’s why, we are continuously developing a range of emission-reducing components and technologies for integration onboard FPSOs, demonstrating the potential for further carbon-intensity reduction based on near-market ready technologies.
Emission-Reducing Technologies
emissionZero Program
Under the emissionZERO® program, we are continuously developing a range of emission-reducing components and technologies for integration onboard FPSOs, demonstrating the potential for further carbon-intensity reduction based on near-market ready technologies including:
- Carbon capture: Together with our partner MHI, we are developing the post-combustion carbon capture module for use onboard FPSO vessels. The technology has obtained DNV’s Statement of Qualified Technology and can now be proposed and customized for specific projects and clients.
- Investment in the early stages of offshore hydrogen, ammonia, and lithium production studies. Additionally, ongoing investment in robotics will enhance safety and efficiency within SBM Offshore’s operational fleet.
- Patents: In 2023 alone, we filed 36 new patent applications to the portfolio of 122 patent families, particularly in the areas of renewables and electrification. SBM has made headway in 22 technology development projects of which 9 have reached ‘TRL 4’ – the level where reliability, function and performance criteria are met and the technology is ready to be deployed, for example, the qualification of an energy-saving deep water suction system for the use of colder water on the topside.
Innovation mindset and landscape
We are renowned as an innovator in offshore technology and we draw on the expertise, enthusiasm and creative mindset of our employees.
We enable innovation by structuring challenges, crowdsourcing ideas and making dedicated resources available in R&D to ensure our ideas become reality. Driven by our ongoing commitment to sustainability and the energy transition, we share our expertise and partner with like-minded companies to bring concrete solutions for our customers in the energy industry.
Our Innovation platform: We have created an internal innovation platform, which has been visited by almost 40% of SBM Offshore’s employees, that allows our expert SBMers to contribute ideas and comments to our existing and proposed innovation projects.
