Environmental Stewardship
We recognize our responsibility in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and are dedicated to playing our part in mitigating its effects. Our vision encompasses a future where energy is not only reliable and efficient but also environmentally responsible. For a better blue tomorrow, our deepwater marine expertise will continue to innovate in offshore production and open new markets of the blue economy leveraging both our know-how and our sustainability approach.
Sustainability PolicyLifecycle Approach
Integrating Sustainability Across Project Lifecycles
Our ambition is to integrate sustainability in every step of the long lifecycle of our projects – from new technological development to the recycling phase. Our products are designed with longevity and integrity in mind, often in operation for decades while maintaining high performance standards. When products reach the end of their lifetime, they are recycled to high standards.

Responsible Waste Management
With our Sustainability Policy, we are committed to responsibly managing the waste generated by our activities. Our environmental management system and waste management plans adhere to the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, treat, and dispose. Through initiatives such as best-practice produced-water discharging and plastic waste reduction campaigns, we have achieved significant reductions, including a 34% decrease in plastic waste in 2021.
In 2020, the MOPU Deep Panuke PFC underwent safe disconnection and was transported to Nova Scotia, Canada, for recycling. This process aligns with SBM Offshore’s Responsible Recycling Policy, ensuring that end-of-life assets are managed sustainably and in full compliance with environmental regulations.
Environment Impact
Assessing the environmental impact of our FPSOs
As part of field development, environmental impact assessments are performed, which looks at the potential environmental and social impact in all locations of planned FPSOs.
These studies look at a variety of potential outcomes in the FPSO life cycle, such as the potential for oil spills and how oil in water would affect the local ecosystem, how drilling wells would impact the local seabed/geology, and how helicopter operations would affect seabirds, among other things.
The studies are performed with open consultation and ensure that SBM Offshore FPSOs have as little impact on the local environment as possible.

Reducing carbon emissions throughout operations
SBM Offshore is committed to a strategy and actions compatible with its ambition to achieve net zero by no later than 2050, including emissions in scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 – downstream leased assets. Our primary focus here is reducing emissions from flaring, having zero oil spills, and developing low- and non-carbon solutions.
