SBM Offshore is selected by EDF Energies Nouvelles to provide floating wind systems solution for pilot offshore France

The French government announced November 4, 2016 that it has selected the EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF EN) proposal to construct a pilot floating wind farm for its Provence Grand Large project. This follows the call for projects by the Environment and Energy Management Agency – Agence de L’Environnement et de La Maitrise de L’Energie (ADEME). The project will benefit from the ADEME financing scheme – as part of the French government’s support and plan for renewable energy projects.

SBM Offshore announces that its tender selected by EDF EN to provide its proprietary floating systems solution for offshore wind turbines gains acceptance within this context. The project is subject to achieving committed financing, which would result in a contract to include engineering, procurement, construction and installation services for three floating systems to be installed offshore France.

As the market-leader in floating solutions for the energy industry and a recognized pioneer, SBM Offshore has been proactive over the last ten years in its in-house development for offshore, renewable energy technologies. In addition, SBM Offshore collaborates with IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN), the French Research Institute, to further develop the floating system and its engineering capabilities. IFPEN will provide engineering services to SBM Offshore for the Provence Grand Large project.

Complex floating wind projects require strong offshore experience and expertise. SBM Offshore is the technology leader for Turret and Mooring Systems (TMS) having supplied over 100 mooring systems, to numerous clients, in many locations, over almost 60 years. The Company’s collaboration with IFPEN, a leading researcher and pioneer in the wind domain, has led to the development of this optimum solution to meet the technical and economic challenges inherent in the development of floating wind farms.

As world-leader in its domain, SBM Offshore leverages its vast experience in the Oil & Gas industry, for state-of-the-art, mooring solutions and the design, construction and installation of floating units, with over 283 cumulative years of experience operating them. With its global presence and French-based R&D Testing Centre in Carros, SBM Offshore is well-positioned to contribute to the evolution of technology for the Offshore Renewables industry.

Editor’s notes – wind floater technology

Compatible with all wind turbines, SBM Offshore’s floater, developed in cooperation with IFPEN, uses field-proven, offshore technology and components that have a track-record for the highest level of reliability and performance.

The minimal footprint floater represents an economical solution for the development of floating wind farms, both in terms ofCAPEX, thanks to a light and optimized structure and in terms ofOPEXthanks to reduced motion and stress on the turbine components. The solution can be assembled and deployed using existing construction and port infrastructure.
