Floating Offshore Wind
The FOW market is developing worldwide. In anticipation of future commercial projects, SBM Offshore has developed an innovative floating structure for offshore wind turbines, allowing the economic development of floating wind farms.
Floating Offshore Wind by SBM Offshore
SBM Offshore successfully delivered Provence Grand Large, its first pilot floating offshore wind farm project in 2023, leveraging its experience in EPCI for floating solutions and mooring systems. SBM Offshore has also been active in the co-development of floating offshore wind projects and securing seabed rights and relevant permits, together with partners.
Why FOW?
Floating Offshore Wind provides for new possibilities for wind power production locations. Floating offshore wind turbines enable access to deeper water than conventional fixed-bottom wind turbines. This reduces visibility from shore and expands the viable area for wind energy development, potentially to areas with higher and steadier wind characteristics.
SBM Offshore’s commitment to innovation is exemplified by the successful implementation of Float4Wind™ in the Provence Grand Large pilot project led by EDF Renouvelables and Maple Power. Located offshore France at 17 kilometers off Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, near Marseille, this groundbreaking initiative marks the first commercial deployment of tension leg mooring technology in a floating offshore wind project. With three tension leg floaters supporting 8.4MW wind turbine generators, this project demonstrates the viability and potential of Float4Wind™ in real-world applications.
Building on the success of the Provence Grand Large pilot project, we are committed to refining our product offerings and delivering competitive, industrialized solutions that accelerate the global shift towards sustainable energy.
