What We Do

Floating Production Solutions & Operations

At SBM Offshore, we provide floating production solutions to the offshore energy industry. Our main activities are the design, supply, installation, operation, and life extension of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels through our IMR (Inspection Maintenance and Repair) services. Our flexible contracting models allow for our clients to lease our FPSOs or purchase them through turnkey sales with operations and maintenance options.

Our expertise: Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units

Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units are ocean infrastructure assets built to facilitate access to deep-water sites and harvest hard-to-reach oil and gas resources.

These large units can extract, collect, process, store, and offload resources from beneath the seabed. To enable these activities, FPSOs are anchored using mooring systems that are adapted to different depths and environmental conditions.

Our Activities

Out of the three main FPSO segments (new-build, large conversions, and small conversions), SBM Offshore focuses on the following two:

  • New-build FPSOs, with oil production volumes of up to 250,000 barrels per day. This is typically the focus of our Fast4Ward® FPSO.
  • Large conversion FPSOs, with oil production capacities of up to 150,000 barrels per day, representing our traditional FPSO market. Oil tankers, also known as Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), are converted to FPSOs.

Our fleet, comprising 16 units, operates globally, spanning regions and countries such as Guyana, Brazil, West Africa, and Southeast Asia. This fleet includes 15 FPSOs and one semi-submersible unit.

Fast4Ward®

Fast4Ward®: Transforming the Oil and Gas Industry through Innovation and Efficiency

The Fast4Ward® program by SBM Offshore is transforming the oil and gas industry through prioritizing efficiency, risk mitigation, and quality enhancement. By standardizing project design and execution, leveraging digital solutions, and optimizing resource allocation, Fast4Ward® accelerates project delivery, reduces costs, and enhances safety standards. With its client-centric approach, standardized FPSO designs, and modular construction, the program drives tangible benefits such as lower break-even points and improved operational efficiency and engages vendors early to reduce supply-chain costs and construction timelines by up to 12 months.

At its core lies the Multi-Purpose Floater (MPF) hull, a generic new-build structure engineered to accommodate various configurations such as internal turret, external turret, or spread-moored configurations. It has a capacity of approximately 50,000 tonnes for operating topsides, along with a comprehensive catalogue of topside modules for all FPSO systems. The key to its versatility lies in modularization, facilitating maximum interchangeability of modules tailored to each project’s requirements, without compromising overall functionality.

The MPF’s ample deck space enables the lowering of module height, significantly reducing topside complexity.

Bringing near zero emissions solutions

emissionZERO®

emissionZERO® is SBM Offshore’s program targeting near zero emissions. emissionZERO® brings to market floating energy production solutions with near zero emissions. We set targets in line with the net-zero ambitions of key stakeholders and call for their active engagement. emissionZERO® is a program for continuous product development, providing a platform for stakeholder engagement at the same time. Fast4Ward® is the foundation for our emissionZERO® program.

Our key commitments with emissionZERO®

  • we work towards near zero emissions from operations (scope 1 emissions)
  • we source green electricity to run our business (scope 2 emissions)
  • we execute projects and procure with continued emission reductions in mind (scope 3 emissions)

Our people at the core of the process

Offshore Operations

Offshore operations are a valuable part of SBM Offshore’s activities, meeting the world’s growing energy needs while also addressing environmental concerns.

Through research, development, execution and storage, our employees are at the core of the process to deliver valuable services to our clients. The key activities of our operations are the execution of projects, delivery of floating production systems, together with vendors and supply-chain partners, and the operation of these systems to highest standards.

To support this approach, the Company maintains a dedicated Operational Excellence organization at Group level, incorporating resources with diverse expertise aimed at achieving our Target Excellence.
